Recap of Blue Bloods Season 12 Episode 14: Loyalty (2023)

Well that was another side of Erin's personality!

For most of Blue Blood's Season 12 Episode 14, she was on her usual high horse of doing things by the book and not accepting proof unless she had proof that everything was fine.

But in the last two minutes of the lesson, she decided to take Joe bowling and she seemed to become a completely different person. She was...funny! Who would have thought she was capable of this?

Recap of Blue Bloods Season 12 Episode 14: Loyalty (1)

For a while, it seems like Erin's only line in each episode is endless variations on "We've got to do this by the book."

Unsurprisingly, she wants to make things right. After all, she is Frank's daughter.

But somehow, when he insists on playing by the rules, Frank has a strong moral compass. When Erin does it, she comes across as arrogant and annoying.

There's a sort of saint-than-thou attitude that often emanates from her that makes me tempted to change channels, and her reactions to Joe's evidence were no exception.

Recap of Blue Bloods Season 12 Episode 14: Loyalty (2)

To prove Erin right, she often has to step on the gas when her brothers, especially Danny, are pushing for warrants that aren't fully backed by evidence, or asking them to look the other way at a dubious search or interrogation tactic.

So she's probably conditioned to expect unreasonable requests from anyone connected to the Reagan family. At this point, she may be tired of declaring over and over that justice is not served by ignoring the law.

Still, Joe didn't come to her with an agenda. He wasn't even involved in a case when he heard Deanna talking on the phone. He was trying to enjoy the ending of their last connection when he suddenly heard her engage in unethical behavior.

And when he got to Anthony, he tried to rectify that mistake without getting his connection partner in trouble. Then Erin had to come over and stare at him for possibly reporting privileged information.

Recap of Blue Bloods Season 12 Episode 14: Loyalty (3)

Pooh! Instead of being so obnoxious about it, be grateful he even reported anything. It almost felt like Erin was hoping Joe had gotten the information wrong so she could brag about not being able to use it.

And that's what happened the whole hour. Again and again and again.

Even with Deanna missing, both Joe and Anthony had to point out that there were urgent circumstances before Erin would consider checking her last known address without a search warrant!

I understand Erin wanting to stick to the book, but come on! If a woman is MIA and is known to be associated with a gangster-like criminal, her safety should be a priority.

Joe's behavior was also much better this time than last time.

The last time he showed up, he was breaking laws left and right to gain conviction, earning Jamie's wrath.

This time, he tried to do the right thing only to have Erin scold him for no apparent reason.

She made up with that whole bowling/Missing Joe Sr sequence, but her demeanor was tedious to keep up until then.

Recap of Blue Bloods Season 12 Episode 14: Loyalty (5)

Frank's ethical dilemma was far more compelling.

He often does things by the book and feels uncomfortable breaking the rules, but this time he got stuck between a rock and a tricky spot.

Sid: He's a great cop, on duty and off.
Frank: What does that mean?
Sid: He coached the police tire team to the finals three years in a row.
Frank: I wish that would flow in.
Sid: It has to play out. Look how many children he has helped stay on the right path.
Frank: That doesn't change the fact that his own son is wary and crooked.

Moretti might have been one of his best cops, but he still put himself and everyone else at risk by letting his gang-affiliated son live with him.

(Video) Blue Bloods Season 13 Storyline Has Been REVEALED..

Frank didn't want to lose Moretti, but what's the use of holding him when he could potentially endanger other cops?

Frank: We lost too many good cops. So I'm trying to shift my weight a bit. But how many times can I break the rules before the costs outweigh the benefits?
Sid: I think you have room.
Frank: I don't. For the past year I've become too soft.
Sid: I must have missed the soft touch days. Can I say something?
Frank: You can't. Wisdom given to make someone feel better is not wisdom. It blows smoke.
Sid: Sir, no one has ever laid on their deathbed and said they wished they were a tough guy.

Frank and Sid's conversation about it was a highlight of the hour, but Tony Danza's performance really made the show a success.

Moretti was a devoted father, or at least tried to be. He blamed himself for his son's troubles and wanted to make amends by giving him a safe place.

Frank's solution seemed heartless to him. He couldn't imagine throwing his drug-addicted son out of the house.

But Frank was right. Vincent had already tricked the gang into shooting up the house once before. If he continued to live at home, there was no telling what tragedy would befall them.

It was strange that the family seemed so calm after the shooting. It was almost as if they were used to it. It happened and it was over.

I can understand Moretti reacting that way. He's a cop and needs to be able to handle being shot at without falling apart. But it should have been a bigger deal for his wife and children.

Of course, if Vincent has been in trouble for a while, the family could have expected something like this. Still, being shot at is a scary experience, especially if it's never happened before, and you'd think the people involved would have a reaction.

After all, both Eddie and Baez, in different ways, stood up for their right to be taken as seriously as the boys.

Danny: How many times have you told me not to roll over other detectives, poach their cases? That sounds like what you're doing now.
Baez: Yes, but you always do it anyway because you follow your gut. So maybe it's time to go with my gut.

(Video) Blue Bloods Season 13 NEW Details REVEALED..

I loved how Baez pointed out that Danny always follows his gut, so let's go with theirs this time.

Read Walker Buehler also gets his first career shutout, Dodgers blank D-backs 4-0

She has often pointed out this double standard and refused to accept it. Good for you!

As for Eddie, this assignment was tough, but it wasn't entirely her fault that it went wrong.

How was she supposed to predict that someone she knew would be in this bar, blowing her cover on the suspect she was trying to trap?

Katie was right that once Eddie was done, going undercover was dangerous for her. But that decision could have been made with a slightly less punitive attitude.

Of course, that wasn't the real story. The important point here was that Eddie would rather be a detective than a sergeant. She proved to everyone's satisfaction that she was intelligent and capable enough to be a sergeant, and then left.

I'm glad the Reagans understood and supported. The last thing we needed was Jamie or Eddie yelling at everyone whose life was at stake.

As for Danny and Baez, the case seemed secondary to Baez's need to get justice for the woman she idolized. I found the resolution of this one difficult to follow.

Hank killed Mimi for a reason I don't know, but the cops knew he had an accomplice, so they kept tabs on Bill and made sure he knew. I'm not sure what the point of that was, but it bought us some more Baez time, so I'll keep going with that.
